2 days Meteora Tour from Thessaloniki by Train

The sunset is always approximate but it was enjoyable to sit around and see these fabulous mountains - between heaven and earth. All was easy and well arranged.

The guide was very nice and knowledgeable, she provided also some good tips to visit the places as well as plenty of historical information. The time dedicated to each monastery is between 45 and 60 min, hence more than enough to enjoy the visits and to take pictures. The building are true masterpieces, and the panorama and views are unforgettable. For women, remember to bring a long skirt as it is required to enter the monasteries, although some of them may have some spare foulards to be used for the visits. Remember also to bring some water/food as in case of rush the time dedicated to additional stops could be very limited.

This trip was a long day but completely worth it! The train was comfortable and travelled through some beautiful scenery and meeting Ria (apologies if this is spelt incorrectly!) at... read more the station was quick and easy! We stopped first in the main square of Kalabaka at a cafe qhich is good for a bathroom break and good snacks / food should you wish but absolutely no pressure to buy. You stop there at the end so good for any purchases for the train back too. There is also a nearby supermarket and many good restaurants which Ria will show you. After this stop then onto the first monastery. Be advised that some monasteries have A LOT of steps / steep slopes to get to them so something to keep in mind. On our trip we visited St Nicholas, Varlaam and the nunnery at St Stephan - All of which are breathtaking....both inside and the views outside. Ria was so knowledgeable and friendly, you were always interested to hear the next pieces of information. It was intriguing to learn how the first monks got to the monasteries, how they built them and especially how they got up / down! Ideally, you would want to spend at least a couple of days in the area to fully explore (I'm sure they'd have a trip for that too!) but if one day is all the time you have then I cannot recommend this trip enough! I would certainly book again.

This was amazing! Just everything you wish for its there. You have your own time to explore but still keep the group. The guide I got was really awesome and... read more so clever. If you go to Greece this is a must do experience even the train is a bit too long then its totally worth it.

Guide Clement and driver Elias made the tour visits in good timing and enjoyable. Glad to learn more about the monasteries and soaked in the magnificent landscape.

Really nice and friendly guides - They were really nice. Even if we did not pay the Spanish tour, as we were Spanish, they explained everything in Spanish.
The transportation is comfortable and you have plenty... read more of time to visit everything, with nice explanation from the guide and nice spots to admire the mountains.
As a kind of drawback, they do not enter with you to the monasteries to explain from inside. They let you to enter on your own to visit it, with a prior explanation of everything. Although it was a good explanation with plenty detail, someone might prefer them to enter with you. As for me, I liked it because like that you can spend time on those places you liked the most and the visit is not so

We booked this trip at the last minute and could not have been happier. Arrangements were made for our transportation to and from Athens via the train. Be aware that... read more one-way train ride is four hours so it’s a minimum of eight hours on the train. We were met at the Kalabaca train station by our driver and our guide and had our private vehicle for the afternoon to visit the area. We were able to have a guided tour in one of the monasteries and then also able to visit two other monasteries of the six that are in the area. Our driver and guide Took us to beautiful Vistapoint to take pictures and were sure to allow us time to grab a snack before we board the train at 6:22 PM. It was a long day however really worth it if you’d like to see this area of Greece is well worth the time.
