Our tour guide, Charis, was very... read more knowledgeable about the history of the monasteries and other attractions in the area of Meteora that we visited and he literally answered any question that he had, a lot of times backing his responses with references to official historic and recent research data.

That was probably on of the best experiences overall we had from a guided tour that lasted a bit over 5 hours. Thank you Charis, Sakis and Meteora Thrones!

Clement was our tour guide who was excellent and you can tell he loves his job and passionate about sharing his knowledge. I give him 5 stars.

Day 2, because of the storm, the monasteries closed, train tracks and roads closed. The tour company tried to get us back to Athens by bus but because the roads closed, the tour company sent a van to the bus station to pick us up, made arrangements for 1 nt accommodations at their expense. James, the tour company owner, met us at the hotel and made sure we got checked in. Throughout this ordeal, the tour company stayed in close contact with us. We managed to find a different way to return to Athens but this tour company went above and beyond. They cared about us, our well-being and safety and I am very impressed at how they handled the situation.

This trip was a long day but completely worth it! We stopped first in the main square of Kalabaka at a cafe qhich is good for a bathroom break and good snacks / food should you wish but absolutely no pressure to buy. You stop there at the end so good for any purchases for the train back too. There is also a nearby supermarket and many good restaurants which Ria will show you. After this stop then onto the first monastery. Be advised that some monasteries have A LOT of steps / steep slopes to get to them so something to keep in mind. On our trip we visited St Nicholas, Varlaam and the nunnery at St Stephan - All of which are breathtaking....both inside and the views outside. Ria was so knowledgeable and friendly, you were always interested to hear the next pieces of information. It was intriguing to learn how the first monks got to the monasteries, how they built them and especially how they got up / down! Ideally, you would want to spend at least a couple of days in the area to fully explore (I'm sure they'd have a trip for that too!) but if one day is all the time you have then I cannot recommend this trip enough! I would certainly book again.

We knew it was going to be a long day with spending 8... read more hours in total on the train, but we were really interested to visit this unique area of Greece. We brought our simit, coffees and water on the train, but there was a bar car as well selling drinks and snacks. The morning train ride is great as you get to see the beautiful landscape of rural Greece. We arrived and got picked up by our tour guide Fotini and our driver Thanos. We had booked a private tour so we got a whole van to ourselves. That way we also had the flexibility to choose which monasteries to visit and do it at our own pace. We loved the tour very much. Fotini was very knowledgable and we learnt heaps. At the end of the afternoon they dropped us off at a fabulous restaurant (Metheora) as we told them that we are foodies and love to eat! After our fantastic meal they picked us up again and dropped us off at the station. The journey back is long and it was dark, so we napped a bit. Although it's a very long day, it was totally worth it. I would thoroughly recommend it. If you have small children or you like to travel and visit the monasteries at a slower pace, I would stay overnight as there is a lot to see. Also, some of the monasteries you have to climb up a lot of steps. For ladies, don't forget to wear a long skirt or dress as otherwise you won't be able to go inside the monasteries.

They sent their mini bus to pick us up from their office at the foothill and continue to join with the tour.
Both the driver and our tour guide was super friendly, driver made few photo shoot stops for us and bit of guided commentary on the monasteries and guide was very knowledgeable of Meteora's history and geological past.
We would highly recommend Metora Thrones if you are making your vacation plans.

The food was expensive and pretty basic. Discovering that the food was not included in the visit was not very nice. It is these kind of situation were you read the conditions of a trip and when you are offer a promotion with special price, you assume that this was included and it is not.

The narration is fascinating with so many details you would never be able to know without an expert guide. The last 30 minutes on Sunset Rock make for memories of a lifetime (and a few great photos!). Highly recommended!
