We all heard about the numerous benefits that the hiking has, and some of us we fancy with this idea. But why to choose to hike in Meteora instead of having the regular bus trip? Here are my 9 suggestions:
1. Exercise
Hiking is great for your health, mentally and physically.
Like any type of physical activity, hiking is making you active, and walking on uneven terrain, like the hiking trails of Meteora, increases the amount of energy your body uses.
So, you burn more calories, which means that you could have as a reward that huge pastry that you want, without feeling guilty about the calories intake.
Exercise is scientifically proven that it helps you increase your muscle strength and your endurance, it helps reduce the blood pressure, and of course you will see an increase in stamina.
Hiking can help refresh you mentally as well. Clearing and soothing your mind, relieving you from stress.
When we exercise our body releases endorphins, which can help increase positive moods and make us feel happy.
So, basically, at the end of the trip you are going to be all sweaty, tired, and with a big grin on your face.
2. Avoid the crowds
Stay away from the-every-corner-of-the-world tourists, and have the whole place just for yourself.
Our hiking groups are always small, and on the trail, you are not going to see too many people – only your companions for the most part.
3. Direct contact with nature
Have a direct contact with the amazing nature of Meteora: the forest and the “stone forest”, the wild flowers, the birds, the butterflies, sometimes even squirrels are going to surround you.
If you are lucky you might stumble upon some tortoises, lizards, or even snakes on the trail.
You will be able to admire the stunning colors of the trees and the flowers, you will listen to the beautiful songs of the birds, and as such, you will gain a deeper appreciation for Mother Nature.
In all cases, you will be impressed by what you will see and experience!
4. Feel the energy of the place
Going on foot you can really feel and understand what brought the first hermits to Meteora.
Either you believe in God, or you believe that we are made of stardust, you can’t deny the spirituality of this amazing place. And this is the best way to get in touch with it.
5. See the hidden parts of Meteora
The dragon’s cave, the monastery of Ypapanti, the “backside” of the rocks, the abandoned settlement of the old Kastraki, are some of the places that are inaccessible by bus.
Why would you limit yourself and experience only what is accessible to everyone?
Choosing to hike you will have the chance to admire much more than what you can from the bus.
6. Friendly to the enviroment
It is an environment friendly way of having a trip – today is more necessary than ever to think about your carbon footprint.
So why don’t you leave the bus/taxi/car behind once in a while, and take a walk/hike?
7. A break from modern times
It provides a much needed break from technology.
Every day we are all constantly surrounded by so many screens and devices, so it’s essential to take some time to get away from it.
Hiking is an ideal time to leave aside your smart devices and pick up a walking stick.
8, Photos anyone?
Great opportunity for great photos! Now who am I kidding?
Bring your phone or camera and you will get those shots that are going to make all your friends jealous!
We all want to share the best photos on Facebook and on Instagram, and a hike at Meteora is the best way to get them.
9. Studying the great outdoors
Learn about the flora and fauna of the area, the local folklore, and the “gossips” of Kalampaka and Kastraki, things that only a local could tell you.
For this part, you will most definitely need a guide.
