Meteora : The creation of a unique geological phenomenon

How was Meteora formed? What happened millions of years ago to have the chance now to admire this unique and impressive phenomenon?

The majestic rocks of Meteora dominate the area of Kalabaka. Those who have already visited Meteora, having been stunned by the spectacular scenery and the beauty of its, claim that this fame is not at all exaggerating!

Really, though … Have you ever wondered how these enormous and unique rocks were firstly created?

Undoubtedly, it is considered a rare geological phenomenon that could leave no geologists or researchers indifferent, who despite being occasionally involved in it, but have not yet resulted in any safe conclusions. It’s about dark rocks, which have been made of sandstone and their height reaches up to 313 meters. According to historical data, they have formed about 60 million years ago, specifically during the Paleogene Period.

Only a German geologist who visited Meteora in the 19th century came up with a theory that even today seems to be the most predominant. His theory claims that the creation of the big boulders is due to a deltoid cone of river boulders and rocks composed of a mixture of sandstone and conglomerate that for millions of years forced the waters towards the Aegean Sea, creating the impression that the land had risen. This really justifies the fact that the Thessalian plain is a particularly prosperous place. The theory of the German scientist also supports that after these geological changes took place, bringing into the light these cliffs, the waters were taken away to the Aegean Sea. During the formation of the Alpine ridges of the Pindus Mountains, this part was cut off from its compact form, due to the corrosive action of water, winds, intense rainfall, and thus created smaller cliffs which, through disintegration, erosion, and earthquakes took the form we know today.

According to the scientists, the solidification of river stones and sand in solid rocks was the result of the dissolution of the limestone rocks and the pressure they received. This explanation by the German scientist Alexander Phillipson is now considered an integrated approach because it effectively explains the peculiar character of the rocks and hills following the theory of the Thessalian’s claiming that there was a sea in Thessaly.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that according to Greek mythology, the presence of the rocks in Meteora is due to the famous battle between the Titans and the Olympian gods, when Zeus used the Hecantonchires (giants with hundred hands) to lift huge rocks and throw them against the Titans.
